Justification Tool Kit
In the current economy, organizations everywhere have had to tighten their training and travel budgets, sometimes severely. Professionals are finding that it is more important than ever to present a strong business case to their supervisor to justify their attendance at a conference. Below are a few tips and tools to assist you in this endeavor.
- Emphasize how your attendance at the meeting will benefit your employer.
- Offer to share the knowledge you gain by preparing a short presentation, or simply sharing your conference materials. Each attendee will be given access to the entire compendium of technical papers.
- Remind your employer that this is an inexpensive way to maintain your professional competency.
- If you serve as a representative of an ITE district, council or committee, stress the fact that this is also a time for you to meet with this group where you will be influential in the decision-making process and can be an advocate of your company’s objectives.
- Accentuate that this is a great opportunity for international collaboration, growing your organization’s professional network.
- Plan to have your duties covered while you’re away from the office, and be prepared to answer emails and voicemails from the meeting.
- Split the costs. If you have a coworker or friend attending, offer to share a room to keep accommodation costs low.
