Background Information
ITE is a strong supporter of the National Roadway Safety Strategy (NRSS) and a strong advocate for use of the Safe System Approach. On January 27, 2022, USDOT released the NRSS, a comprehensive approach to reduce serious injuries and deaths on the Nation’s highways, roads, and streets. More than 40,000 people die on America’s roads. Through the NRSS, USDOT committed to a national vision of zero roadway fatalities and identified priority actions it will take in pursuit of five Safe System objectives: Safer People, Safer Roads, Safer Vehicles, Safer Speeds, and Post-Crash Care.
Examples of ITE’s wide range of products to support widespread adoption of the Safe System Approach include:
Implementing the Safe System Approach Course, a new certificate-based blended learning course that provides an in-depth understanding of the Safe System Approach and its application.
Publications developed by ITE to support the USDOT, such as the Safe System Approach for Speed Management and Safe System Approach for the Urban Core informational reports.
Publications developed by ITE Councils and Standing Committees, such as Incorporating Big Data into Safety Analysis: An Integrated and Proactive Approach, Applications of Big Data in Safety Analysis, and Institutionalizing the Safe System Approach in Local Road Safety Plans.
ITE’s Safe System webpage and Speed Management for Safety resource hub.
In addition to the efforts mentioned above, ITE believes that our students can play an important role on implementing Safe System Approach strategies to save lives. This video competition, led by the ITE Safety Council, will be a professional development opportunity for ITE student chapters interested in learning more about the Safe System Approach, networking with transportation safety professionals, and increasing awareness of Safe System solutions to improve safety in our roads.
