About ITE

Pedestrian and Bicycle Committee

Chair: Patrick Wright, PA LTAP Via Pennoni, Camp Hill, PA, USA
Vice Chair: Jessie Holzer Carpenter, PTP, City of Beverly Hills, Beverly Hills, CA USA

The Pedestrian and Bicycle Committee represents and promotes the needs of pedestrians, bicyclists and other forms of non-motorized (human-powered) travel in the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of transportation infrastructure. The Committee seeks to promote the development of comprehensive transportation infrastructure that is inclusive of all modes of travel; serve as a crosscutting resource between other organizations and agencies on pedestrian and bicycle matters; and educate ITE membership, agencies, organizations and policy-makers on the needs of the pedestrian and bicycle communities.

Projects completed by the Committee (previously the Pedestrian and Bicycle Council) include ITE award-winning Informational Reports “Alternative Treatments for At-Grade Pedestrian Crossings” and “Innovative Bicycle Treatments.” In addition, the Committee worked with the Traffic Engineering, Transit and Transportation Planning Councils in developing an informational report on site design review guidelines for promoting alternative transportation modes. A number of additional projects related to both bicycle and pedestrian issues currently are being conducted by the Committee and by Committee members including establishing criteria for marked crosswalks at signalized and unsignalized intersections, pedestrians at roundabouts, and assisting with the annual Bicycling and Walking Benchmarking Study.

The Pedestrian and Bicycle Committee has a Discussion Group, where members can post technical questions and receive quick responses from their peers.
