When: October 17, 2024 | 2:00 - 3:00 PM ET
This webinar is led by the ITE Traffic Engineering Council
Webinar Description:
In August 2023, the US Access Board released the Final Rule on Public Right-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG). It's been a year since then, so where are we now? The PROWAG Guidelines are intended to help federal, state, and local government bodies make their pedestrian facilities, such as sidewalks, crosswalks, shared-use paths, and on-street parking, accessible to people with disabilities. The adoption process of a rule like PROWAG has several steps, but many agencies have moved forward with compliance already. This webinar will first provide an overview of the contents of the new PROWAG Guidelines, the current status of PROWAG adoption and an overview of the rule making and adoption process. Then we'll dive into two example projects that illustrate how various jurisdictions and projects have been making changes to comply with PROWAG.
Next, we will discuss how PROWAG is influencing updates to local guidance documents, including the wrinkles of how those updates happen, and lessons learned on the different facets to consider.
Finally to wrap up we'll head to Tucson, AZ, where rumors of new PROWAG rules had been getting around for many years, and many agencies were requesting ramps be designed to those undefined standards to help provide future-proof infrastructure. The PROWAG final rule was published the month before a design project started with a 9-month funding deadline and the goal of providing ramps, driveways and sidewalk across eight miles of Tucson roads, so they took the plunge. Having now wrapped up the design phase of that project, they'll share lessons learned.
