Land Use as a Fundamental Safety Strategy

When: December 16, 2025 | 2:00 -- 3:30 PM ET

Webinar Description:

This webinar will examine how land use and transportation strategies can improve road safety by reducing exposure to systemic risk. It will center on examples from public agencies, highlighting how they are applying land use and transit considerations to improve transportation safety outcomes.

The conversation will identify where development patterns create safety challenges and how socioeconomic factors such as mode choice and affordable housing can create safer multimodal systems. The session will also explore how bringing these population-scale, upstream interventions into the Safe System approach supports proactive, human-centered strategies aimed at eliminating fatalities and serious injuries on our roads.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore real examples from public agencies to better understand how socioeconomic factors affect safety outcomes and how the Safe Systems Pyramid can guide identification of exposure-related safety challenges.
  • Determine how population-scale interventions that change trip origins, destinations, distance, and modes by influencing land use mix, parking supply and pricing, transit service, housing affordability, and other socio-economic conditions can support proactive, human-centered approaches aimed at reducing fatalities and serious injuries.
  • Understand how objective data can be combined to develop a Movement and Place street typology for speed-limit-setting.
  • Learn about opportunities to get involved in ITE efforts related to this topic.
